Being an artist defines who I am now.  While I split my
time between working in colored pencil and painting en
plein air, I am always thinking of ways to do
something new and different with my chosen
mediums.  A love of nature and simply being outside as
much as possible has always been the driving force.
From childhood I sketched and painted whenever
possible.  I have worked in almost every medium one
can think of, starting with pencil, watercolor for
animals and landscapes and then pastel portraits and
flowers.  My first attempts at plein air work were
watercolors for years in Kentucky. Then after moving
to Florida, I got interested in oils. And at the same
time occasionally dabbled in pastels and acrylics
outside.  Recently I have been using oil pastels along
with colored pencil for studio work and working in
pastels en plein air.
An artist sees the world differently; we don't just observe a face or a landscape, we are mentally considering how
one would draw or paint it.  This leads to some great paintings and also some really distracted ramblings.  When a
problem is on my mind about how to solve an artistic dilemma, I notice and take mental notes on what I see on
people and local landscapes.

I do a lot of wildlife art in colored pencil...inspired by my own zoo photography in Kentucky, Florida, and Europe.
It is fascinating to try to catch the spirit of an animal that doesn't necessarily show up in a photo, and make it
come to life in the drawing.
